At Fishtown Wellness Center and Personal Evolution, we know it takes action, not just words, to bring about change. It is more than just waving a sign or saying that we stand with you. We will stand up with you against the human rights violations that are taking place against your community. We will speak out against racism whenever it shows its face, and we promise to provide programs that support equality, equity, and justice for all.
Together, we can confront the injustices of systemic racism that have plagued the Black and brown communities of America for centuries now. Let’s build a nation that finally lives up to the promise of liberty and justice for all.
And to all those who also wish to support the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, here are some ways to move towards a true status quo:
- Collaborate with and support people of color in your community. This can be in the form of partnering with Black and POC business owners, making the workplace more diverse, donating supplies to schools and advocating to better education in predominantly Black communities.
- Create safe spaces for communication. Check in with Black persons in the workforce or in your community. Create a space for dialogue that is welcome. Don’t make special events to bring light to the events happening in the country. Make it one-on-one and personal.
- Have a diverse network of friends. Racial equity is a lifelong project, so deepen your relationships with people of all ages, color, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Create a network that is as deep and diverse as the world.
- Teach yourself to be anti-racist. Education is the gateway to change. Read up on the history of racial injustice. Learn about the history of white privilege. And don’t forget to teach others—especially children—about compassion, empathy, and self-awareness. Remember, part of the privilege of those unaffected by racial inequity is the ability to never have to think about how race affects your life. The more you know, the better an advocate you can be for the Black community.
- Donate and contribute directly to Black Lives Matter.
Every little action made in support of racial equity and the Black Lives Matter movement is a step in the right direction.
